Carp Fishing Fishfinders, Winch Cams & GPS

What is the benefit of having a larger fishfinder screen size?

A large screen is easier to see, much like on your mobile phone for example, so you can see a little more detail of what's being shown.

What distance/range does a fishfinder need to have?

Whilst there is no set answer to this, as it is relative to the ranges you are fishing, a good fish finder unit, on a 2.4ghz frequency without external interference should be giving you up 300m which would cover most circumstances.

Do winch cameras still offer picture clarity in murky water?

Yes, they can. Most of what we see as coloured water is primarily in the upper, layers, and as you go deeper, the clarity improves. This is due to the algae in the water. On shallower, heavily stocked lakes this would more likely be suspended sediment however turned over by the fish or wind, disturbing the bottom. The units with a high-powered LED ring light can use that illumination in lower light caused by the algae in the upper layers to provide picture clarity, however.

What is the difference between the cheaper winch cameras and the more expensive models?

More expensive models will be better constructed, and often possess more features, such as dual cameras, (front and downward facing), being able to record, as well as rechargeable battery units, rather than being hard-wired to the boat.

What are the benefits of using GPS?

GPS means you can track the boat, and get back to set waypoints so you can get back to spots more accurately. Many echo sounders for conventional boats will have GPS now, so you can drive back to the spot in the boat, and a wide number of bait boats also have GPS options with or without autopilot features so the boat can auto return to saved spots without the need for you to drive it.

Which GPS has the best battery life?

This is dependent on the model/manufacturer and the power supply used if it's on a boat.
