Carp Fishing Bivvies & Shelters FAQs
Do I need a bivvy or day shelter?
This is dependent on the duration of your session, and how big the swims might be. Most carp fishing brollies will be between 55-60" in size, and some come as systems with the option of either a solid infill or mozzie mesh. These are great for anglers who are mobile or do quick overnight sessions. They are also ideal when fishing places where bankside space is tight, such as overgrown lakes, or canals. For longer sessions, or where you might be more exposed to the elements, such as in autumn, winter and early spring, a bivvy will provide more space and offer more protection.
What are the differences between bivvies and normal camping tents?
Bivvies tend to be constructed from a thicker material, for additional protection, and a stronger, taller frame to afford more space for the angler.
What are the main differences between the more expensive bivvies and shelters and the cheaper options?
More expensive bivvies will be made from better materials. You will find they are often a better system of erection, meaning you can get them up and down faster, whilst offering a better grade of fabric so it's more breathable whilst offering a higher level of waterproofing, otherwise known as the hydrostatic head. The higher the hydrostatic rating, the faster the water will bead off.
What size of bivvy or shelter do I need?
This is entirely down to the individual, and what they want to carry. If you are taking your partner or kids, or do a lot of European fishing, a two-man might be best, however, most one-man shelters will afford more than enough space for the average UK angler.
Do bivvies offer UV protection as well as protection from wet and windy conditions?
Most bivvies will offer UV protection as they will keep you out of direct sun, whilst offering you shelter and protection from the elements.
Are bivvies easy to assemble?
Bivvies will vary in their erection methods, however, they are very often easy to set up, some more so than others.
