Carp Fishing Bivvies & Shelters FAQs

Do I need a bivvy or day shelter?

This is dependent on the duration of your session, and how big the swims might be. Most carp fishing brollies will be between 55-60" in size, and some come as systems with the option of either a solid infill or mozzie mesh. These are great for anglers who are mobile or do quick overnight sessions. They are also ideal when fishing places where bankside space is tight, such as overgrown lakes, or canals. For longer sessions, or where you might be more exposed to the elements, such as in autumn, winter and early spring, a bivvy will provide more space and offer more protection.

What are the differences between bivvies and normal camping tents?

Bivvies tend to be constructed from a thicker material, for additional protection, and a stronger, taller frame to afford more space for the angler.

What are the main differences between the more expensive bivvies and shelters and the cheaper options?

More expensive bivvies will be made from better materials. You will find they are often a better system of erection, meaning you can get them up and down faster, whilst offering a better grade of fabric so it's more breathable whilst offering a higher level of waterproofing, otherwise known as the hydrostatic head. The higher the hydrostatic rating, the faster the water will bead off.

What size of bivvy or shelter do I need?

This is entirely down to the individual, and what they want to carry. If you are taking your partner or kids, or do a lot of European fishing, a two-man might be best, however, most one-man shelters will afford more than enough space for the average UK angler.

Do bivvies offer UV protection as well as protection from wet and windy conditions?

Most bivvies will offer UV protection as they will keep you out of direct sun, whilst offering you shelter and protection from the elements.

Are bivvies easy to assemble?

Bivvies will vary in their erection methods, however, they are very often easy to set up, some more so than others.

Explore our range of carp bivvy & shelters

A carp anglers’ home from home! There is a multitude of different carp bivvy options, shelters and brolly systems all designed to keep you warm and dry in the harshest of weather.

The first real development in bankside accommodation came when Kevin Nash invented the 60” oval brolly. With more ribs touching the ground and with it being bigger than its 50” round predecessor, it became the must-have item of the early 90’s and still to this day there are carp anglers all over the UK who prefer the umbrella style shelter.

Storm sides came soon after, followed by a dedicated overwrap and then the carp angling world changed once more when the pram hood style shelter was developed.

A multitude of different fishing bivvies and shelters followed as the carp angling brands battled to bring out the biggest and best. Aquatexx were one step ahead, replacing the standard nylon materials, then we had the front peak and the inner dome style shelters that all but eliminated condensation; a feature that has now found its way into some umbrella systems.

So which carp bivvy or shelter option is best for you? Well, it depends.

If you are an angler who only really fishes one or two nights at a time, then an umbrella style system may be your best bet as this is a range of carp fishing bivvies that can be easily stored. Many systems have zip in and zip out solid panels if the weather takes a turn for the worse during the summer. You can also buy dedicated overwraps for the winter, making this the perfect range of fishing bivvies to suit you and your impromptu fishing trip.

If you prefer a bit more room, then a pramhood style carp bivvy may be more suitable. With a larger footprint, these provide a bit more comfort on the bank, particularly for those who spend numerous nights in the same place and with the addition of a bed chair, you will be in ultimate comfort all night long! These bivvies come equipped with side panels and stable shelter for all weather conditions, allowing you to spend long nights by the water in comfort. Don't forget bivvy lights to make your stay on the banks safer and enjoy your favourite book.

Fishing for carp can take a lot of time and with the right bait, you can be more than lucky. With one of the many carp fishing bivvies available, you will be sheltered from the elements as you fish, allowing you to beat your previous record for your biggest fish caught.

If you like copious amounts of room then two-man a carp bivvy will be a great choice. They are especially good for session anglers or people who fish abroad on a regular basis. With lots of room, especially with overwraps added, these really are a home away from home! Two-man carp fishing bivvies are also excellent if you take your partner or offspring fishing with you as you have room for all the essentials such as bait and rods.

How To Choose Your Carp Bivvy

It really does come down to personal choice at the end of the day, but there are a few things to consider on top of all that:

• Hydrostatic Head – This figure represents the amount of water needed before the material stops being waterproof. 1000mm hydrostatic head is the bare minimum for any material to be considered waterproof. All of the carp bivvy products we sell come with a minimum 5000mm hydrostatic head, 5 x times the required amount and the majority come with at least 10,000mm hydrostatic head, so rest assured you will remain completely dry!

• Size – How much room do you need? One and two man shelters are both available and some are even designed for the long stay Euro angler with loads of room for two people plus all the tackle you could possibly need! For all carp anglers, a wide selection of durable carp fishing bivvies are available to cater for every location and all weather conditions that you may encounter. As well as these, there are also a number of other additions such as storm poles that help to make your carp fishing bivvies more durable for even the worst of weather conditions.

Trakker, Aqua, Nash and Fox are spending lots of money on material research and design; Chub, Avid, JRC and ESP are also producing excellent fishing bivvies and shelters, so there really isn’t a bad one on the market in this day and age. Our wide selection of carp fishing bivvies also come in a wide range of sizes, allowing you to choose the one that is right for you.

Here at Total Fishing Tackle, we not only stock a huge range of shelters, but we also have all the accessories that you will ever need. What’s more, we even have our own range of TFT bivvies made by Fox, such as the Royale Classic TT Pro starting at just £149.99! Not only that but with Free UK delivery on orders over £50 as well as fast delivery, you can have your fishing bivvies with you in time for your next trip.

As always, if you need any advice or help choosing the right bivvies for you, then please get in touch and we will point you in the right direction to the perfect carp bivvy for your style of fishing.
