Carp Fishing Indicators & Accessories FAQs

How do bite indicators work?

They work by maintaining tension on the line to keep it in contact with the alarm system, so the line has less risk of lifting off the roller. In addition, they provide a further visual indication, as they will rise when you get a run (this is as the fish moves away from you), and fall back towards the floor when the line is slackening off when you get a drop back (fish moves towards you).

Do I need to use bite indicators as well as using a bite alarm?

Yes, as the indicator will maintain some tension on the line to keep in contact with the alarm so that the alarm can register the movement.

Should I choose a bobbin or swinger indicator?

This is personal preference, with most anglers preferring bobbins. However, bobbins can apply more direct weight to the line but will be more prone to movement in strong wind, whereas a swinger will be more stable in windier conditions.

What are the main differences between the more expensive indicators and the cheaper options?

This will be mainly build quality and cosmetic appearance.

How sensitive are bite indicators?

This is dependent on how they are set up, the size, and weight of the head, along with whether the line is gripped or free running.

Should I use a rod pod, banksticks with buzz bars or single banksticks?

This is personal preference, bank sticks are probably more popular with pods favoured for hard ground or platforms. Single sticks are ideal for snag fishing.
