Carp Fishing Carp Care & Unhooking Mats FAQs
Why should I use an unhooking mat or cradle?
As anglers, we have a duty of care to what we catch, and the use of an unhooking mat or cradle is vital in that. It protects the fish whilst we lay them down so we can unhook them safely. They are widely enforced on most fisheries as a must-have as a result.
Should I choose an unhooking mat or cradle?
This is down to personal preference to some extent, a cradle will offer sides, to prevent the fish from sliding off the mat, but then maybe visible in shots, whereas a traditional mat will be flat. They will vary in thickness, and the more padded the better. However, some fisheries may specify a cradle or non-cradle rule.
What should I include in my carp care kit?
A carp care kit is an important part of treating any wounds or damage the fish might have. Propolis is the main treatment many anglers use, and is naturally derived, and anti-bacterial to aid the healing process and is safe to be used anywhere on the fish barring its gills or deep in the mouth. A purpose-made mouth kit is worth looking at.
What are the main differences between the more expensive mats and cradles and the cheaper options?
More expensive mats/cradles will be better constructed from thicker materials and often be larger and more padded.
What size unhooking mat do I need?
The larger the better. Most fisheries will have a rule stating minimum size, but the larger the mat, the better protected the fish should you catch a fish of a lifetime.
What size water bucket do I need?
This is entirely personal preference, however, most tend to be of a similar size.
