Fishing Bait FAQs

What is fishing bait?

Fishing bait covers a wide array of feeds used to entice and catch at your chosen quarry. This can be broken down into various categories:

  • Natural Bait: These can be maggots, worms, and casters.
  • Boilies: These are rolled boiled baits made with mixes of powders, and proteins, and flavours.
  • Particle Bait: These include pellets, nuts, seeds, and pulses, such as hempseed, tiger nuts, sweetcorn, maize, and pigeon conditioner.
  • Live & Dead Baits: These are used to target predatory species, such as pike, perch, zander, and catfish.

What is the best bait for fishing?

This is subjective to what species you are targetting, and the time of year. Generally, boilies and particles are great for carp in the summer, and you simply reduce quantities or the oil levels into cold months, where naturals are better for small species as they are less selective.

Can you make your own fishing bait?

Yes of course, however, it is worth ensuring you research this to ensure the bait is prepared correctly, with no harmful ingredients. Alternatively, things like bread and sweetcorn are fine to use straight out of the cupboard, or there are a huge array of ready-made, off-the-shelf baits in your tackle shop and off our website.

How much does fishing bait cost?

This varies hugely depending on the type of bait, and the quantities required. A 1kg bag of boilies would be around £12 - £13 as a current average, whereas a 1kg bag of pellets would be around £6.

What's the best fishing bait brand?

This is entirely subjective, however, long-standing and popular brands include Mainline, Sticky Baits, CC Moore, Nash, and Dynamite to name just a few.

How much bait do I need for a fishing trip?

This is entirely subjective depending on what you are looking to fish for, how long, and the stock of fish present. For a day's float fishing, around 1.5 pints - 2 pints of maggots and some sweetcorn/groundbait would suffice. For a day's carp fishing 1kg - 2kg of boilies and some pellets would be enough on some club lakes, upping that to around 3kg - 5kg if you are doing 24hr - 48hr session. However, on lower stock venues, this might be less, or somewhere like Linear, you might need to double it in warmer weather and bulk it out with particles.

You can always consult the venue before you go, or if you need advice, our team of experts will be happy to advise.
