Sea Fishing Line FAQs
What is the best type of line for use in saltwater?
There is an array of purpose-designed sea fishing lines to use from manufacturers these are usually differently coloured to your usual typical freshwater fishing line colours being red, blue, yellow, green and of course clear.
Should I choose braid or monofilament line?
Whether you choose braid or mono depends on the reel type you are using and the venue you are fishing. Mono is a fairly common line used as it's more user friendly however it does have its limitations. Mono has a lot of stretch so fishing at long distance bites will be harder to see. Braided main line is best to use as bite detection is at its best, very abrasion-resistant and can help with long-distance casting. However braid can cause wind knots which can become a nightmare to untangle if you're fairly new to using braid.
Does the size/weight of the fish I am targeting determine which line to use?
A mono reel line of around 15lbs in breaking strain is more than sufficient to deal with flat/non-snaggy venues stepping up to around 18lbs to 20lbs if the venue is rocky. A braided reel line of 30lbs is plenty of strength on most venues whether snaggy or flat.
Do the water conditions determine which type of line to use?
If the water is murky a coloured mainline is best to see the bites but if the water is very clear (during summer normally) then the clear line will be best as it is less obtrusive.
What are the main differences between the cheaper lines and the more expensive options?
With mono lines the higher the cost the better quality you will get. With braided mainlines there are different strands so the higher the strand number the better the quality/strength.
Does the colour of the line matter?
If the water is murky a coloured mainline is best to see the bites but if the water is very clear (during summer normally) then the clear line will be best as it is less obtrusive.
Top Quality, Strong & Durable Sea Fishing Line
When it comes to sea fishing, your line is the vital link between you and your new PB. It's a very important item of your angling journey, the lifeline that connects you to the thrilling world beneath the waves. But not all fishing lines are created equal, and the unique challenges of saltwater demand a careful selection.
Braid Line
Braid lines have become increasingly popular among sea anglers for their remarkable strength, thin diameter, and enhanced sensitivity. These qualities make them well-suited for the challenging conditions and powerful fish species found in saltwater environments.
Mono Lines
Monofilament (mono) lines have been a staple in the angler's toolkit for decades, and they remain a versatile and reliable option for sea fishing. They have some stretch, which serves as a shock absorber during aggressive strikes or when battling powerful fish, reducing the risk of line breakage.
So Much More
Selecting the right sea fishing line is crucial to your success on the open water. Whether you opt for the impressive strength of braid lines or the versatility of mono lines, your choice of line can make or break your fishing experience.
