Coarse Fishing Hooks & Hooklength FAQs

Does the species of fish determine which hook to choose?

Hook choice will generally be determined by the presentation you are using to suit the bait and species you are targeting in the chosen conditions.

Which is the best hooklength for potential snagging in vegetation?

In snaggy conditions, a braid or coated braid will be best.

How do I know the best hook size for my chosen bait?

Generally try to match a bait to hook size, eg a 15mm pop-up for example is best on a size 4 to an 8 hook, you would not use a single maggot or grain of corn. For that, you would go down to say a 14-18 for example.

Can the hooks handle the force of large or hard-fighting fish?

Yes, but this is based on the hook, as the gauge of wire the hook is made from will vary depending on the pattern and size. So larger hooker with a thicker wire will be stronger.

Why does the strength of the hooklength have to match the breaking strain of my mainline?

Generally speaking no, however, this depends on the set up. On a pole, or whip the hook length should be a lighter breaking strain to the mainline. On a rod and reel your hook can be stepped up in carp fishing, but in float, and feeder fishing you would often step it down again lighter than the mainline to avoid damage to the rod.

Which are the best hooks for a safe catch and release?

There generally is no variation on this, as most hooks are designed with this in mind. However certain presentations or patterns such as bent hooks are banned, so check fishery rules.

The Best Coarse Fishing Hooks

Our online store has many hook styles that you can choose from because we know that without hooks, your rig won’t do you much good.
