Carp Fishing Rod FAQs
What size carp rod is right for me?
Most carp rods will be 12ft and applicable for most circumstances. Shorter rods are ideal for closer range, or small waters where only short distances are required, or for stalking, fishing under low overhanging trees etc, and longer rods, such as 13ft are more suited to longer range.
Do I need a one or two piece carp rod?
Most carp rods will all be 2 piece rods, with the exclusion of some 1 piece 6ft stalking rods. Travel rods might well be 3 or even 4 pieces depending on length.
How do I decide what test curve is right for me and my carp rod?
Test curve will be based on the range you are trying to fish up too. The longer the range you are wishing to fish, the heavier the test curve you will wish to consider. Should you wish to fish with method feeders, solid PVA bags, then this would also warrant a heavier test curve. As a rule a 3lb to 3.5lb test curve tends to be most popular.
Do I need to consider rod ring size for carp rods?
Rod ring guides on most carp rods will be fairly standard, tapering from either a 40mm or 50mm butt guide, down to a 12 or 16mm tip ring. With many anglers favouring larger faced reels due to line capacity when using heavier lines, most 12 and 13ft rods will have 50mm guides.
What are the main differences between the more expensive carp rods and the cheaper options?
Carp rods can vary drastically in price. More expensive rods will be constructed from better materials and will also possess a lower resin content. This means the rod will be faster in its recovery when casting and playing fish, but will also be lighter, and retain its longevity much longer.
Do I need a through action or fast action carp rod?
The rod action plays a massive part in how it feels, and how far it will cast. As a rule, most carp rods tend to be a fast action (meaning then bend progressively more from the tip), as opposed to a through action, where the rod bends throughout its length. Fast action rods are better for casting at range or carrying heavier loads for things like solid bags, heavy leads.
