About the Coleman Fishing Brand

The origins of the enterprise trace back to the early 1900s when W. C. Coleman, navigating his customary route home from work, chanced upon a brilliantly illuminated lamp in a shop window. Plagued by poor eyesight and hindered by the flickering gas lamps of that era, he found himself intrigued by the lamp's radiant glow. This fascination ignited his determination to unravel the lamp's secrets. Today, more than a century later, the brand has evolved into a beloved and revered name, cherished by outdoor enthusiasts globally.

The inaugural instance of a commercially utilised Coleman light unfolded in 1905, as he extended his innovative gas lamps to illuminate a nighttime football match. During that era, nestled in the Kansas countryside, the prospect of electricity was remote. Sunlight dictated daily activities. The introduction of nighttime football via W. C. Coleman's luminous solution captured the town's imagination. His 300-candlepower lantern, capable of illuminating a 100-yard radius, experienced soaring demand. Its effectiveness in lighting barns contributed significantly to enhanced productivity, propelling the company's growth.

Remarkably, Coleman's lamps assumed a pivotal role in both the first and second world wars. The United States government recognised Coleman's capabilities based on their deployment during the First World War. Consequently, when they required a portable stove that could accommodate diverse fuels and function under any condition, in a form smaller than a quart bottle of milk, Coleman delivered. The portable stove emerged as the second most crucial non-military equipment during the war, second only to the Jeep.

The triumph of Coleman stoves during the war garnered the brand considerable recognition amongst returning soldiers. This surge in popularity translated into a significant upsurge in the use of portable stoves for camping. This arena became the catalyst for the brand's substantial growth. Over time, the camping segment flourished, encompassing innovative plastic bubble cool boxes, sleeping bags, tents, and an extensive array of products. By 1962, the company offered a comprehensive line of camping gear appealing to the burgeoning middle class.

For contemporary anglers, the brand name remains synonymous with exceptional stoves and lanterns. These reliable companions frequently accompany us to the waterside, a testament to the enduring passion for innovation. The remarkable genesis of the entire enterprise, stemming from one individual's desire for effortless nighttime reading, remains a source of inspiration.
