Fox Mini Micron Bite Alarm
You'll have to go waaaaay back to remember the original Mini Micron alarms from Fox, they were very popular due to the simplicity of the technology and the £19.99 price point. Well, fast forward over 20 years and Fox have re-launched the Fox Mini Micron so we asked our our resident blogger Wayne Box, to take a look! I must be old because I remember the original mini micron bite alarms when Fox first introduced them to the carp fishing world. I can't for the life of me recall the year but it must have been late 90's. So why re-introduce a bite alarm that is over 20 years old? Well, first of all lets take a brief look at the original Fox Micron Mini.
Just looking at the picture of the old Micron Mini alarms has brought back so many good memories! I was fishing with my carp fishing rods on an old estate lake at the time, I must have only been in my early to mid teens but I remember seeing a set of the Micron Mini's and my lasting memory is that they were LOUD! They had a simple on/off switch and a roller wheel design. A single red LED and two slots for isotopes, that was it. Such a simple design, akin to a Steve Neville if you like. The best bit was that they were only £19.99, which despite sounding cheap, twenty years ago was still a fair amount of money. Carp anglers loved the simplicity and the loudness, they were also tiny, Mini by name, mini by nature. Now fast forward twenty years plus and Fox have brought out a new version, the Mini Micron.
Straight away you can see there are practically no similarities to the original design and that isn't a bad thing. I guess the size is probably the only thing they have in common. The new Mini Micron alarm is small, which is surprising considering the tech that is inside them. Tone, volume and sensitivity adjustment are all present but don't be fooled into thinking there are loads of options, there are four tone settings, four volume settings and two sensitivity settings, which to be fair to Fox should be more than enough to cover 90% of angling scenarios. You can however, adjust the LED intensity (brightness) by holding down the volume button and then tapping the tone button at the same time. Speaking of the size, the Fox Mini Micron fits comfortably in the palm of my hand, if nothing else it shows just how compact these alarms are or 'dinky' as my daughter called them. The Piezo speaker is both crisp and clear and the rubber inserts at the point of contact where the rod meets the alarm is a nice touch to help protect your carbon. So far so good right? Well the proof of the pudding is in the eating as they say so I will come back to you in the new year of 2021 to let you know how they are getting on. I'll be looking at their waterproofness, the battery life and the reliability, potential flaws that only time can expose. For now though I am quietly confident that the Fox Mini Micron will be one of the best budget alarms you'll be able to buy this year. Blimey I almost forgot the price! Just £29.99. Which for the features you get, should be a bloody bargain.
As always, good luck if you are heading out on the bank.
Stay safe and tight lines!
