Best Carp Fishing Hooks: A Total Fishing Tackle Review

A lot has been said about the importance of choosing the right hook for the right angling situation. It doesn't matter if it's on a zig rig, a chod rig or a standard bottom bait rig; the hook choice can be the difference between landing a fish and losing one! There are a lot of choices when it comes to companies that make good carp hooks, but we have selected a few of ours to help make that decision a little bit easier!
How to choose the right fishing hook
Hook choice can be subdivided into a few different categories - pop-up rigs, bottom bait rigs and specialist rigs such as solid PVA bags or zig rigs.
Each rig will require a different style of hook, size of hook and of course, don't forget the fishery rules on barbed or barbless hooks.
We have selected our favourite hook for bottom bait rigs, pop-up rigs and spinner rigs, but it ultimately comes down to personal choice and experience, so don't be afraid to experiment and try new things.
Korda Wide Gape Hooks have been around for so long now, and it is very hard to improve something that is already so good! Well, up stepped the Korda Product Development team, and they produced the Kamakura range, sharpened to a stage that is unachievable with any normal tools. These hooks are frighteningly sharp, so for the bottom bait category, the Kord Wide Gape Kaumukura was an easy winner. Use these for any bottom bait, wafter or solid PVA bag rigs.
Our favourite hook for pop-up rigs has gone to a late starter in the field of hooks, only recently releasing its range of hooks but already making serious waves and impressing a lot of people. The Thinking Anglers Beaked Chod Hook takes the top spot, but to be fair, there were a number of other options that came close. If beaked points are not your thing, they also released a straight-point version. These hooks are great for chod rigs, stiff rigs and even zig rigs in their smallest size.
Lastly, for the spinner rig fans, we have looked and looked, but we cannot find a better hook than the Gardner Tackle Rigga CVR - although not primarily designed for spinner rigs, the CVR hooks sit absolutely perfectly, ready to catch hold when sucked in by a hungry carp. Other notable contenders were the Korda Krank and the Korda Spinner Hooks.
As always, there has to be a favourite of the Total Fishing Team, and we debated long and hard before awarding the number one hook choice to the Korda Kamakura Wide Gape Hooks!
It was impossible to look past the longevity of the hook and the fact that they can actually be fished as bottom bait hooks, wafters and pop-ups. Plus, we are seeing Korda anglers now using them on spinner rigs; they really are extremely versatile.

Fishing for me has long been more than a hobby, but more of an obsession. Since as far back as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by water, and all that which lives below the surface, and subsequently, as soon as I was old enough to hold a fishing rod, my angling journey started.
