Like fishing rods, landing nets can be a very personal choice. Aesthetics, function and price always influence the decision anglers make when purchasing a new fishing rod.
We were inspired by a classic design from the past. Available in the early 1980s from a North London store, Dons or Edmonton. Their Springbow was a brown fiberglass net, with a very unique, heavy duty stainless steel spreader tube, but it was the net of the day and the only serious choice for the carp angler of the time!
The fashion today seems to be to use very thin handles that resemble or match the angler's carp rods.
We have completely bucked this trend. It was incredibly important to performance that both the arms and rod had inherent stiffness. By using a very low diameter rod you increase the weight because you have to increase the wall thickness. A handle with a larger diameter increases stiffness, is easier to use and feels more comfortable in the hand. We can use a thinner wall without sacrificing strength or weight.
Our design has a 6' handle that tapers from 23 to 18mm. Made from ultra-light, high-quality carbon fiber in a beautiful satin black finish. With a beautifully turned 316 stainless steel point at the end. This has helped to create a net that is so light that when fully assembled and in use, it sits perfectly on the surface of the water without the need for any kind of net float.
One of the key design points was to create a 'striking' spreader block. Something that is extremely light, very strong and unique in appearance. From concept to production, we adjusted the design four times in a period of approximately two and a half years. The final version is stunning to see. Designed by our friends at JAG, it's incredibly light, but more importantly, very easy to use and assemble. If you offer the arms to the block, you will see that the block has a slight oval shape on the inside. We've edited the block so that it has what we call a "leading" edge. This makes extra room for the arm when it bends and is pushed into place. The arms leave the block at the perfect 91 degree angle, this together with the use of the stiffest arms we could make without compromising the assembly, gives a truly beautiful shape to each assembled net. Each arm has an oversized, machined, rounded end of anodized aluminum, designed not to push through and damage the mesh. This part holds the thick green cord between the arms, with zero stretch and a perfect curve in the arms keeping everything as tight as possible and helping to reduce drag as it is pushed through the water.
The aluminum spreader block is machined on the front and back (you can see the arms in it). This provides weight savings and "chassis-like styling". On the front we made a small slot to fit a 15mm isotope (NOT included) and on the back we engraved the Spring Bow logo. Finally, we sprayed the block in a durable, ceramic Gun Smoke finish.
We have made three versions, 42", 46" and 50". Each version comes with a mid-depth net in full Hexmesh. The net section is deep enough for the angler who chooses to push the handle into the lake bottom with the arms far enough above the water to hold carp and prevent them from jumping loose after capture!
If you are in mainland Europe, there are two versions of the Spring Bow Landing Net available, with the option to purchase the net with the medium mesh or the shallow mesh. If you're in the UK, only the medium version is available complete. However, the shallow meshes are available separately from our stockists.
All nets come in a heavy-duty Korda Dark Kamo cover with separate pockets for both the handle and arms.
