Fishing Bite Alarms FAQs

What is a bite alarm?

A bite alarm is, as the name suggests, an alarm designed to signal when a fish has picked up your baited rig, removing the need to watch a float or quiver tip. These are designed to work with legered baits only and rely on the fish moving once the bait has been picked up by the fish, and then the line movement is indicated by noise and or light from the alarm head. These are generally suited for specimen anglers targeting carp, catfish, pike and tench.

What are the types of bite alarms?

Many of the alarms on the market are very similar in that they sit in front of the reel, just before the butt eye of the rod, with the line running over either a magnetic wheel or a small stalk, as in Delkim's case, to detect the movement in the line, sensing either the movement across the wheel or vibration. The exception is a small number of pike alarms which sit behind the reel, from the butt rest, and a large head tensions the line under the reel. Should the line pull free from the head, or if it slackens off, the alarm is triggered when the head drops. This is designed to help reduce the time the pike has to swallow the dead bait and ultimately get deep hooked, causing unwanted damage.

How much do bite alarms cost?

Bite alarms will vary massively from as little as £20 for a basic single head, and up to £800 depending on if you choose a presentation set, consisting of 3 or 4 alarm heads and a remote receiver.

What's the best bite alarm brand?

Generally, the 3 most popular brands are Fox, Delkim, and Nash. However, other reputable brands include Neville and Gardner.

How do I look after my bite alarm?

Taking care of your alarms is important, as the last thing you want is for them to fail and not signal a bite. Ensuring the protective covers are used when the alarms are in transit so they don't get damaged, and the batteries are changed when required, and not stored in the alarm for long periods out of use, is a good starting point.

Whilst your alarm heads are often waterproof from the elements, allowing your alarms to dry and not be stored in cases when wet reduces the risk of damp ingressing into the internals, causing damage. If you do have a receiver, keep this dry as it will often not be weather-sealed, just like the alarm heads.

Do you need a bobbin with a bite alarm?

For this, I would generally always say yes. A bobbin serves 2 purposes, the first being indication, so you can see the line movement, be it forward or backwards, if the line slackens off. This is useful as it can help measure how much movement there has been. The other function is the bobbin provides weight, so in the event of a drop back, the bobbin can pick up the slack and ensure the line is kept in contact with the wheel to ensure the alarm can register it.
