Coarse Fishing Tackle FAQs

What is the difference between boilies, pellets, and groundbait, and which is the best for coarse fishing?

Boilies are pre-boiled baits consisting of a blend of base mix, eggs, and flavours and attractor packages, and can vary hugely in flavour, size, colour, and what base mix they have been rolled with eg fish meals, bird seed, milk proteins.

Pellets will vary in the type of pellet eg high/low oil contents, and size, as well as some flavoured options. Ground baits are a soft powered attractor, in a range of flavours, to which you add water/liquids along with pellets, and other small loose feed items to feed your swim.

All of the above can be added as loose feed, whereas the pellets boilies can be used as hookbaits.

What are the main differences between the cheaper coarse barrows and the more expensive models?

More expensive models will often be constructed from better materials, making them lighter, and more sturdy/easier to manoeuvre.

What should be the main considerations when choosing a coarse fishing rod?

This will depend on the type of course fishing you are looking to pursue, for example, carp, predator, or specific condition or style you are looking to do eg quiver tip, float, etc.

What size coarse reel is right for me?

This will vary depending on the style of fishing you are doing and the rod/lines you are using. Generally, you will balance the reel with the rod.

Monofilament, fluorocarbon or braided line for coarse fishing?

Again this will depend on the style of fishing and conditions you are fishing in, and in the case of braid, the fishery rules.

What is the difference between barbed and barbless hooks?

Purely the barb.
